Annual FYS Workshop - August 2019
Date and time
Location
Drake University
2507 University Ave Meredith 235 Des Moines, IA 50311Description
This year’s workshop will pay particular attention to the relationship between FYS and the new Bulldog Foundations class, in which over half of FYS students will be enrolled this year and which will be mandatory for all in-coming first-year students beginning in the fall of 2020.
We also will discuss STARFISH, the retention tool that was introduced last year. We have made some modifications in how it will be used with first-year students, so even if you taught FYS last year and were introduced to it then, there will be new information that will be useful.
Finally, we will spend time on assignment design and working effectively with a class consisting entirely of in-coming first-year students. Many experienced FYS instructors skip the workshop because they think there is nothing they do not already know about the program.
We strongly urge you to come anyway, as there is likely to be some “new” material involving Bulldog Foundations and STARFISH, and because the workshop is most effective when there is a mix of people with varying levels of experience teaching FYS.
